“Mum and I were both patients at Cione Wellness Centre – but as I improved, she sadly declined neurologically. Rewind to 2019, Mum had felt dizzy for two years. She was having problems with her balance. Then she began falling.

Her journey to diagnosis was long and agonising, filled with numerous misdiagnoses (Parkinson’s, inner ear issues), before we received the life-changing news. My beloved Mum had Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP).

In recognition of PSP Awareness Week, I’m sharing early signs to watch for. These are simple tips when you can sense something is wrong before the doctors can. You may not need this information now. Hopefully not ever. But just in case.

1 Denial. If you notice something ‘off’ with your loved one and mention it to them, expect them to brush it off. See point 2 and 3.

2 Shuffling feet. Might deny this and say shoes or slippers are too big.

3 Tremors. Might deny this and say they’re shivering from cold.

4 Quiet. Might stop engaging in conversation and look lost in thought thinking of other things. In reality,
conversation becomes too fast and it’s hard to keep up.

5 Dizziness. Might complain of dizziness, balance issues, or the feeling ‘something has happened to me that I can’t explain’.

6 Falls. When Mum started falling, she had three in five days (including one down the stairs). With PSP, falls are often BACKWARDS not forwards, we later learned this is a very significant telltale sign.

7 Something ‘not right’ with the eyes. There is lots of medical jargon about what PSP does to the eyes, but the best way for me to describe it is that something felt like it was ‘going on’ behind Mum’s eyes – turns out it was her brain not doing what it should be.

8 Furniture walking. Will hold on to walls, sofas, armchairs, chests of drawers, kitchen surfaces etc. while moving around the house, to try and keep balance.

Trust your gut on any changes. Get a referral to neurologist."

For headache sufferers. A large percentage of the ‘pain’ symptoms known as ‘headaches’, build up due to skeletal dysfunctions.

The negative weight loads created while moving or resting through the poor posture and mechanics of dynamic movement, brings on muscle tightness and fatigue, inflammation and nerve impingements, which in turn effect the sensitive structures within the neck and head, bringing on ‘cluster’ headaches and Migraine symptoms.

Get in touch with us today at the CiONE Wellness Centre to find how we can help with headaches and migraines.
